About the sign we keep borrowing from

The original Go To Church Or The Devil Will Get You! sign stands on private land beside Interstate 65 north of Prattville, in Autauga County, and belonged to Montgomery construction contractor W.S. Bill Newell. His sons took over its upkeep after he died in 2009. A storm knocked it flat in the fall of 2016, and the family put it back up in 2018 with the original devil salvaged and the same wording. It has been a landmark for anyone making the Birmingham to Montgomery drive for decades.

More on the sign: the Associated Press report on its 2018 return, Sean Dietrich's column When In 'Bama, and the Wikipedia pages for Prattville and Interstate 65 in Alabama, the stretch of road it watches over.

Support the podcast

Taproot Therapy Collective is a clinical practice in Hoover, Alabama, serving the Birmingham metro in person and the whole state by teletherapy. This store supports our educational outreach through the podcast and blog, so we can keep producing mental health content for the public free of charge.

Buying a t-shirt is not therapy. If you need clinical support, please schedule a consultation or call (205) 598-6471.

Prices were current when this page was updated in September 2026. Final pricing, sizes, colors, shipping, and Printify's 30-day return policy are handled at checkout in our Printify storefront.
