Brittany Gray, M.Ed., LPC-S

Brittany Gray is a holistic, compassionate, and deeply invested Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor serving the Hoover, Alabama community at Taproot Therapy Collective. She earned both her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and her Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Auburn University. Over her distinguished career, Brittany has built extensive clinical expertise serving as a Vet Center Director, a Team Operations Coordinator for the Veteran’s Crisis Line, and a dedicated family therapist across multiple intensive care settings.

Brittany is profoundly committed to meeting individuals exactly where they are, creating a grounded space of safety, comfort, openness, and honesty. Operating as a true clinical collaborator, she approaches every individual with unconditional acceptance and positive regard. Her ultimate goal is to guide clients through interpersonal anxieties, compound trauma, and deep-seated stuck points so they can reshape their self-image, reclaim their beliefs, and feel as though they are finally “coming home to themselves.”

Complex Trauma & Evidence-Based Care

Brittany specializes in treating Complex Trauma (C-PTSD) by navigating the intricate interplay between somatic physical sensations and cognitive mental processing. Her background includes extensive work with military veterans, first responders, and individuals navigating combat-related trauma, military sexual trauma (MST), traumatic brain injuries (TBI), deep grief, and profound loss.

She understands that chronic strain and compound trauma—the cumulative weight of ongoing life stress—can often be far more disruptive than acute, isolated events. These experiences frequently warp a person’s outlook on what is possible in life. Brittany believes that expanding clinical awareness, changing our internal context points, and shifting our language are the keys to true psychological growth. To facilitate this, she seamlessly blends specialized modalities, including trauma-focused Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Brainspotting.

Burnout, Transitions, & Women’s Mental Health

A major pillar of Brittany’s practice is treating severe professional exhaustion and caregiver burnout. Having worked extensively within interdisciplinary medical and crisis systems, she provides targeted stress management and burnout recovery for healthcare workers, nurses, and corporate professionals facing toxic workplace strain.

Additionally, Brittany is a passionate advocate for women’s mental health and family wellness. She provides comprehensive support for pregnancy and postpartum adjustment, empty nest transitions, divorce, and the structural navigation of merged families. Through marriage counseling, family systems therapy, and emotion modeling, she helps couples and families resolve high-conflict dynamics and break toxic behavioral loops.

Practicing What She Preaches

Brittany believes deeply in living out the wellness principles she teaches. She maintains her own physical and mental alignment through regular exercise, pilates, and daily mindfulness meditation. Outside of the clinic, she loves spending time with her dog, Hazel. A devoted cinephile, Brittany also enjoys unwinding by watching period pieces and older classic movies.

When CBT & DBT Aren't Enough

Cognitive (CBT) and Dialectical (DBT) therapies are excellent, skills-based tools. For deep-rooted trauma, we use modalities like Internal Family Systems (IFS) that go deeper to heal the underlying wound.

Our Advanced Modalities

“Neuroscience research shows that the only way we can change the way we feel is by becoming aware of our inner experience and learning to befriend what is going inside ourselves.”

― Bessel A. van der Kolk,
The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma

“Beneath the surface of the protective parts of trauma survivors there exists an undamaged essence, a Self that is confident, curious, and calm, a Self that has been sheltered from destruction by the various protectors that have emerged in their efforts to ensure survival. Once those protectors trust that it is safe to separate, the Self will spontaneously emerge, and the parts can be enlisted in the healing process.”

― Bessel A. van der Kolk,
The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma

“Trauma is not what happens to us, but what we hold inside in the absence of an empathetic witness.”

― Peter Levine
