Robin Taylor, LICSW, MSW:

Trauma-Focused Therapist in Birmingham, AL

Integrative Mind-Body in Healing

Robin,  a native of Tuscaloosa, AL and a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker,  specializes in supporting individuals who have survived emotional and psychological trauma, helping them heal from the lasting impacts of those experiences. Her focus is trauma within interpersonal relationships.

Since 2016, she has worked with individuals across the lifespan, offering tools to navigate trauma stemming from a wide range of relationships—including family, romantic partners, friends, clergy, acquaintances, and experiences within the foster care system. Her clients often seek care while navigating trauma that affects their sense of safety, identity, and connection.

Being from a working class, rural background and being the among the first generation in her family to obtain a bachelor’s degree, Robin brings her personal experiences in food service, retail and manufacturing

Robin is especially proud (and excited) to support LGBTQ+ individuals as they explore their identities and build resilience within uncertain—or even unsafe—social environments.

Individuals practicing polyamory and open relationships are also welcome; this is a space where all relationship structures are honored.

You don’t need a formal diagnosis to start therapy. Still, understanding that conditions such as PTSD, anxiety, depression, dissociative disorders, and personality disorders can be rooted in trauma can be helpful. Our bodies and minds adapt to keep us safe in moments of threat. While these survival responses once protected you, therapy can help you release patterns that no longer serve you and develop healthier ways of engaging with both your inner and outer world.

Robin’s Approach to Therapy

Robin believes you are the expert of your life, experiences, and the meaning those experiences hold for you. She serves as a clinical guide, continually learning and growing to meet the unique needs of her clients. Her therapeutic approach is trauma-informed and eclectic, combining evidence-based techniques within a compassionate, validating environment. Through a strong therapeutic alliance, she will collaborate with you to process your experiences and develop tools to manage symptoms that stand in the way of your goals—both short- and long-term.

Together, you will build upon your strengths, identity, and values to move past barriers such as emotional spiraling, ineffective coping, negative self-talk, people-pleasing, hyper-independence, and outdated attachment patterns.

Somatic Approach to Religious Trauma & Deconstruction

Robin is a passionate advocate for survivors of high-control environments and specializes in supporting individuals navigating the complex terrain of faith deconstruction and religious abuse. She understands that healing from spiritual trauma requires more than just changing your mind; it requires a safe environment to release the fear and shame that high-control groups often condition into the body.

In therapy with Robin, you will not need to justify your story or debate theology. Instead, she will gently guide you as you tune into your body’s wisdom to release the “freeze” response often caused by spiritual bypassing and authoritarian control. The core of Robin’s practice is building a safe, judgment-free harbor. She specializes in DARVO dynamics (Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender), women’s issues, family conflict, PTSD, Complex PTSD, and anxiety. She works with the mind-body system to resolve the internal conflict that occurs when your intuition wars with your conditioning. This trapped energy can manifest as chronic guilt, people-pleasing, fawning responses, and an inability to set boundaries in relationships and parenting.

Learning the Difference Between Intuition and Fear

Robin Taylor is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) providing somatic and parts-based therapy in Hoover, AL. She specializes in helping clients heal from PTSD, Complex PTSD, trauma (specifically religious and relational trauma), anxiety, and depression. Robin’s own lived experience as a native of Tuscaloosa from a working-class background allows her to connect deeply with clients navigating societal pressures, financial stress, and the grit required to break generational cycles.

Robin is also well-versed in helping women untangle internalized misogyny and the pressure to be “small” or “quiet.” She helps you distinguish between the voice of your fear (which tries to keep you safe by complying) and the voice of your intuition (which knows you deserve more).

Trauma-Focused Therapeutic Modalities

Robin’s approach integrates Somatic Therapy and Brainspotting, guided by the understanding that trauma is a physiological issue, not just a psychological one. Her training in Somatic Parts-Based Therapy allows her to customize the therapeutic experience to fit each client. This approach—often described as “internal peacemaking”—helps clients identify the conflicted parts of themselves (e.g., “the part of me that wants to leave the church” vs. “the part of me terrified of hell”).

Brainspotting is a primary tool in her practice. “Where you look affects how you feel.” Robin uses this powerful, focused treatment method to identify, process, and release core neurophysiological sources of emotional/body pain, specifically for DARVO victims and those with PTSD. This unique blend of psychotherapy and body-centered therapy encourages nervous system regulation and a restored connection with the body and the intuitive self, leading to sustainable healing and a healthier way of living.

Robin works with our qEEG and Neuromodulation lab providing LENS neurofeedback to help integrate the treatment into therapy.

“When we heal our own trauma, individually and collectively, we don’t just heal our bodies. By refusing to pass on the trauma we inherited, we help heal the world.”

-Resmaa Menakem

"If frightening sensations are not given the time and attention they need to move through the body and resolve or dissolve, the individual will continue to be gripped by fear."

― Peter Levine

“Re-enactments may be played out in intimate relationships, work situations, repetitive accidents or mishaps, and in other seemingly random events. They may also appear in the form of bodily symptoms or psychosomatic diseases. Children who have had a traumatic experience will often repeatedly recreate it in their play. As adults, we are often compelled to re-enact our early traumas in our daily lives. The mechanism is similar regardless of the individual’s age.”

―Peter Levine

“As long as you keep secrets and suppress information, you are fundamentally at war with yourself… The critical issue is allowing yourself to know what you know.”

― Bessel van der Kolk

"The paradox of trauma is that it has both the power to destroy and the power to transform and resurrect."

-Peter A. Levine

"Trauma is a fact of life. It does not, however, have to be a life sentence."

-Peter A. Levine

“Neuroscience research shows that the only way we can change the way we feel is by becoming aware of our inner experience and learning to befriend what is going inside ourselves.”

– Bessel A. van der Kolk
