Beyond "Bad Behavior": Treating the Root Cause

At Taproot Therapy Collective, we believe that behavior is a form of communication. When a child struggles with academic performance, defiance, aggression, or withdrawal, they are often expressing an underlying physiological dysregulation that they cannot yet verbalize.

Standard interventions often focus on reward and punishment systems. While structure is important, these methods often fail to address the root causes of the behavior, which frequently lie in the nervous system. Our approach integrates trauma-informed care with advanced neuroscience.

QEEG Brain Mapping

We utilize Quantitative EEG (qEEG) to visualize your child's brain activity. This allows us to distinguish between physiological issues (like ADHD or processing disorders) and emotional trauma, ensuring we don't medicate a problem that requires therapy, or therapy a problem that requires neurological support.

Parts-Based Therapy

Utilizing Internal Family Systems (IFS) concepts, we help children identify the "protective parts" of themselves. A child isn't "bad"; they may have a "fighter part" that comes out when they feel unsafe at school. This reduces shame and builds self-awareness.

Somatic Experiencing

Trauma lives in the body. We use somatic techniques to help children discharge "stuck" survival energy (fight/flight/freeze) so they can return to a state of calm curiosity required for learning.

Our Child & Family Specialists

Our team comprises experts in neurobiology, trauma, and family systems, dedicated to helping Birmingham families thrive.

Dr. Jason Mishalanie, PhD., BCN | Clinical Director

Dr. Mishalanie bridges the gap between psychology and neurology. He specializes in QEEG brain mapping to identify specific neural dysregulation contributing to behavioral outbursts and learning disabilities. His protocols often combine neurofeedback with behavioral interventions.

Robin Taylor, LICSW, MSW | Trauma & Somatic Specialist

Robin specializes in supporting individuals and families navigating complex trauma, including experiences within the foster care system and high-conflict environments. Her approach integrates:

  • Somatic Experiencing & Brainspotting: Guided by the understanding that trauma is a physiological issue, Robin helps children and teens release the "freeze" response often mistaken for defiance or laziness.
  • Identity & Resilience: Robin provides a safe harbor for LGBTQ+ youth and those exploring their identities in uncertain social environments.
  • Generational Cycle Breaking: She works closely with parents to untangle their own generational trauma, helping them become the "cycle breakers" their children need.

"When we heal our own trauma, individually and collectively, we don't just heal our bodies... we help heal the world." — Resmaa Menakem

Becky Milstead, LPC | Child & Family Therapist

With over two decades of experience, Becky creates a playful, non-judgmental space where children feel safe to express difficult emotions. She is an expert in translating therapeutic concepts into practical home strategies for parents.

The Neuroscience of Trauma and Learning

Academic struggles are rarely just about "intelligence." Learning requires a brain that feels safe. When a child experiences trauma—whether it's a single event, chronic stress, or bullying—their brain re-prioritizes survival over learning.

The Amygdala (The Alarm)

In traumatized children, the amygdala is hyperactive. It perceives non-threats (like a teacher raising their voice) as life-threatening danger. This triggers the fight-flight-freeze response, often leading to sudden outbursts in class or "shutting down."

The Hippocampus (The Librarian)

Responsible for storing memory, the hippocampus can shrink or malfunction under chronic stress. This explains why a smart child might study for hours but "blank out" during a test. Research shows that reducing stress hormones is critical for memory consolidation.

The Prefrontal Cortex (The CEO)

This area handles executive function: planning, focus, and impulse control. Trauma takes the PFC "offline." We use Brainspotting and Neurofeedback to help brings this part of the brain back online, improving focus more effectively than willpower alone.

Polyvagal Theory in the Classroom

Based on the work of Dr. Stephen Porges, Polyvagal Theory explains how our nervous system scans for safety. A child in a state of defensive mobilization cannot learn.

  • Ventral Vagal (Safe & Social): The optimal state for learning. The child is calm, curious, and connected.
  • Sympathetic (Fight/Flight): The child is fidgety, aggressive, or anxious. They are physically mobilized to flee danger.
  • Dorsal Vagal (Freeze/Collapse): The child appears "zoned out," lazy, or depressed. This is a physiological shutdown, not a choice.

Our therapists teach children (and parents) how to map their own nervous system states and use sensory tools to return to Ventral Vagal regulation.

Navigating School Systems: IEPs and 504 Plans

Translating a mental health diagnosis into school support can be overwhelming. We assist families in advocating for their children's needs within the Alabama school system.

504 Plan vs. IEP: What's the Difference?

Section 504 Plans provide accommodations to ensure equal access to learning (e.g., extra time on tests, preferential seating, permission to take sensory breaks). This is often appropriate for anxiety, ADHD, or mild trauma responses.

Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) provide specialized instruction and services. If your child's emotional or behavioral disability significantly impacts their ability to learn the standard curriculum, they may qualify for an IEP under the category of "Emotional Disability" or "Other Health Impairment."

We provide the necessary clinical documentation and can collaborate with school counselors to ensure your child's safety plan is trauma-informed rather than punitive.

Parental Co-Regulation: You Are the Anchor

Children do not learn self-regulation in isolation; they learn it through co-regulation with safe adults. When a child creates chaos, they are often unconsciously asking, "Can you handle my big feelings?"

Our family therapy sessions focus on:

  • Moving from "Time-Out" to "Time-In": Prioritizing connection over isolation during distress.
  • Tracking Triggers: Helping parents identify their own nervous system triggers so they can respond to a child's behavior with calm authority rather than reactive anger.
  • Repair: Teaching families how to repair the relationship rupture after a conflict, which is where the true building of resilience occurs.

Holistic Micronutrition Support

The brain is a physical organ that requires fuel. Hardy MicroNutrition offers clinical-grade formulations that address the biological reality of mental health.

For children with ADHD, mood dysregulation, or trauma histories, micronutrient therapy can be a game-changer. It supports the synthesis of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, often allowing for a reduction in pharmaceutical interventions under medical supervision.
