Burnout in high performers doesn't look like collapse. It looks like still hitting the numbers while feeling nothing, waking at three, snapping at people you love, and privately wondering whether you're broken. At Taproot Therapy Collective in Hoover, minutes from Birmingham, we treat executive and professional burnout as what it is, a nervous system that has been in mobilization for years, and we treat it there, with somatic therapy, Brainspotting and depth work rather than a checklist about boundaries. In person or by secure video anywhere in Alabama, with early and late slots. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama accepted for most clinicians.
What burnout is
The World Health Organization defines burnout as chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed, with three features: exhaustion, cynicism or distance from your work, and reduced effectiveness. That's the outside view. From inside it's a body that can't downshift, a mind that reads every email as a threat, and a growing suspicion that the version of you people depend on is a performance. Burnout is not a mental illness and it is not weakness; it is a predictable result of a nervous system asked to run at emergency speed with no off switch.
Who this page is for
Executives, founders, attorneys, physicians, nurses, clergy, teachers and caregivers. The high performer whose success is intact and whose interior is empty. People who tried a sabbatical and came back to the same body. Anxiety that arrives as a racing heart at your desk. Depression that showed up when the work finally slowed. And the person who did everything right and can't understand why it feels like nothing.
How we treat burnout at Taproot
We start with the body, because burnout lives there. Somatic therapy teaches a nervous system that forgot how to come down to do it again, and it's usually the first thing clients feel change. Parts work goes after the part that can't say no and the one that treats rest as failure, both of which have a history. Brainspotting processes that history, because overwork is very often a trauma response wearing a good suit. And existential work handles the question burnout eventually forces: what was all this for. For physicians and healthcare workers, we have a dedicated page, because the profession has its own version of this.

Frequently asked questions
Is burnout the same as depression?
They overlap and can coexist, but burnout is tied to work and to a nervous system that has been in mobilization for years; depression is broader. The World Health Organization classifies burnout as an occupational phenomenon, not a mental illness. We treat both, and the intake sorts out which you have.
I don't have time for weekly therapy.
Most of our executive clients say that in the first call. Sessions are available by secure video, early and late slots exist, and the point of the work is that you stop spending the energy burnout costs you. If time is genuinely the barrier, say so on the intake call and we'll be honest about what's realistic.
Is this confidential from my company?
Yes. Nothing is shared with an employer, and if you pay privately nothing goes through insurance at all. Private pay is $250 a session.
Isn't this what a coach is for?
A coach works on the calendar. We work on the nervous system that built the calendar: the part that can't say no, the body that can't come down, and the history that made overwork feel like safety. If what you need is coaching, we'll say so.
