Men come to therapy late and for a specific reason: the anger is costing them a marriage, the job, or their kids' trust; the drinking has a shape now; or the body has started failing in ways a doctor can't find. At Taproot Therapy Collective in Hoover, minutes from Birmingham, we treat what's actually going on under those things, a nervous system stuck in fight mode and a history nobody asked about, and we do it in the body, not with a lecture. Male and female therapists, in person or by secure video anywhere in Alabama, with early and late slots. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama accepted for most clinicians.

Why men's mental health looks different

The American Psychological Association's guidelines for practice with boys and men lay out what clinicians see every week: men are less likely to seek help, more likely to present with anger, substance use, risk-taking and physical complaints than with sadness, and more likely to die by suicide, in a culture that reads needing help as failure. HeadsUpGuys and Movember exist because men's depression usually doesn't look like depression. It looks like irritability, sixty-hour weeks, a beer that became four, and a wife who says you've gone somewhere she can't reach.

Who this page is for

Anger that scares the people you love. Stress and career dread in a job you can't leave. Depression that shows up as flatness and rage. Drinking or using that has a shape now. A marriage on its last conversation. Trauma from childhood, deployment, a job or an accident that you've handled by not thinking about it. Burnout. Fathers who don't want to be their fathers. Young men and students under performance pressure.

How we work with men at Taproot

Less talk, more training. Somatic therapy works directly with a body stuck in fight mode: you learn what's happening before the anger and how to change it there. Brainspotting processes the history without requiring you to narrate it, which is why men who hated talk therapy tolerate it. Parts work makes sense of the part that shuts down and the part that explodes. And existential work is for the question underneath most of this, which is what you're for, now that the plan didn't deliver what it promised.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see a male therapist?

Yes. Joel Blackstock, the clinical director, sees men for exactly this. Some men prefer a woman; Kristi Wood and Brittany Gray both work extensively with men, and Brittany ran a Vet Center. Say what you want on the intake call.

Is this anger management?

If a court or an employer requires an anger program, tell us and we'll say whether what we do meets it. What we do is treat the anger as the surface of something: usually a nervous system stuck in fight mode, and a history that put it there. Men who come for anger usually leave having treated trauma.

I don't want to lie on a couch and talk about my childhood.

Good, because that's not the method. Somatic and brain-based therapy works with what your body is doing now. You'll talk less than you think and feel more than you expect. Most men find it more like training than therapy.

What about sessions by video, early or late?

All of it. Video anywhere in Alabama, and early and late slots exist for people whose calendar isn't theirs.
