About Dr. Jay

Dr. Jason Mishalanie is a highly experienced Licensed Psychologist who serves as the Clinical Director of Peak Neuroscience, in Birmingham, Alabama and Dallas,  Texas.

Dr. Mishalanie has an impressive 24 years of experience working in the mental health field. Over the course of his career, he has helped a wide variety of people, including those with chronic mental illnesses, developmental disorders, and traumatic brain injuries. This breadth of experience has given Dr. Mishalanie deep insights into the challenges faced by individuals with diverse needs.

Dr. Mishalanie’s educational background. He earned his Ph.D. in Physiological Psychology from Texas Christian University. Physiological psychology, also known as biological psychology, is the study of how biological processes influence thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This field provides a foundation for understanding the brain-body connection and how it impacts mental health.

In addition to his doctorate, Dr. Mishalanie holds two Masters degrees – one in Clinical Psychology and another in Experimental Psychology. Clinical psychology focuses on assessing, diagnosing, and treating mental health conditions, while experimental psychology involves conducting research to better understand human behavior and mental processes. Together, these degrees have equipped Dr. Mishalanie with a comprehensive understanding of psychological principles and evidence-based practices.

During his doctoral training, Dr. Mishalanie gained specialized knowledge in two key areas. First, he studied recovery of function following brain injury while at Texas Christian University. This expertise is particularly valuable for helping individuals who have experienced traumatic brain injuries or strokes to regain cognitive and physical abilities. Second, Dr. Mishalanie received training in EEG evoked potential recording and analysis at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. EEG, or electroencephalography, is a technique that measures the electrical activity of the brain. By analyzing EEG recordings, Dr. Mishalanie can identify patterns associated with various mental health conditions and use this information to guide treatment.

Before founding Peak Neuroscience, LLC, Dr. Mishalanie served for 10 years as the Chief Psychologist of the Developmental Disabilities division at Metrocare Services in Dallas. In this role, he oversaw psychological services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, such as autism spectrum disorder and Down syndrome. This leadership experience further honed Dr. Mishalanie’s skills in providing specialized, compassionate care to individuals with complex needs.

At Peak Neuroscience, Dr. Mishalanie offers a wide range of services, including neurotherapy and psychotherapy for children and adults. He is skilled in providing treatments such as:

  • QEEG (Quantitative Electroencephalography): This advanced form of brain mapping allows Dr. Mishalanie to identify areas of the brain that may be over- or under-activated, contributing to mental health symptoms. By analyzing QEEG data, he can create targeted treatment plans using neurofeedback and other interventions.
  • EEG Neurofeedback: During neurofeedback sessions, individuals learn to modify their brain wave patterns through real-time feedback and positive reinforcement. This non-invasive therapy can help improve focus, emotional regulation, and overall brain function.
  • LENS (Low Energy Neurofeedback System): LENS is a gentle form of neurofeedback that uses very low power electromagnetic fields to stimulate brain activity. This treatment can be particularly helpful for individuals who are sensitive to traditional neurofeedback protocols.

In addition to his expertise in neurotherapy, Dr. Mishalanie is trained in providing individual and family therapy, as well as behavioral and cognitive-behavioral treatments. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a well-researched approach that helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to mental health issues. By combining psychotherapy with neurotherapy, Dr. Mishalanie offers a comprehensive, integrative approach to mental health care.

Throughout his career, Dr. Mishalanie has also served as a forensic evaluator for the Dallas County courts, conducting child custody and competency evaluations. Forensic psychology involves applying psychological principles and methods to legal questions and issues. This experience has sharpened Dr. Mishalanie’s assessment skills and ability to provide objective, evidence-based recommendations in high-stakes situations.

In summary, Dr. Jason F. Mishalanie is a highly qualified, versatile psychologist who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his work at Peak Neuroscience, LLC. With advanced training in physiological psychology, clinical psychology, and neurotherapy, he is well-equipped to provide personalized, cutting-edge treatments for a wide range of mental health concerns. Whether you’re seeking help for yourself or a loved one, Dr. Mishalanie’s compassionate, evidence-based approach can help you achieve optimal brain health and well-being.
