Brainspotting Therapy in Birmingham, AL
Where you look affects how you feel. Bypass the logical brain to heal trauma and anxiety at their neurological root.
Talking about your trauma or anxiety over and over again is exhausting—and often, it doesn't actually relieve the physical symptoms. You already know your fears might be irrational, but your body still reacts with panic. This is because trauma and severe anxiety do not live in the rational, thinking part of your brain (the neocortex). They live deep in the subcortical brain—the "survival brain."
At Taproot Therapy Collective in Birmingham, we utilize Brainspotting (BSP), a powerful, neuro-experiential brain-body therapy. Discovered by Dr. David Grand, Brainspotting allows us to bypass the limits of traditional talk therapy to locate, process, and release the core neurophysiological sources of emotional and physical pain.
👁️ "Where you look affects how you feel."
Have you ever noticed that when you are trying to remember something, or when you are feeling a strong emotion, your eyes naturally drift to a specific spot in the room? Our visual field is directly wired into our brain's emotional and memory centers. Brainspotting uses this natural physiological mechanism to map exactly where trauma is stored in your nervous system.
How Does Brainspotting Work?
During a Brainspotting session, your therapist will guide you to notice the physical sensations of your anxiety or distress (somatic activation). Using a pointer, the therapist will slowly guide your eyes across your visual field to find a "Brainspot"—an eye position that correlates directly with the neural network holding the traumatic memory or emotional block.
Once the Brainspot is located, the process is largely silent and internally focused. With the therapist providing deep, dual-attunement (a safe, grounding presence), your brain's inherent self-scanning capacity takes over. Your nervous system begins to autonomously process and discharge the trapped survival energy, returning your brain to a state of homeostasis (balance).
What Does Brainspotting Treat?
Because Brainspotting works directly with the autonomic nervous system, it is highly effective for conditions that cause the body to feel stuck in "fight, flight, or freeze."
Trauma & PTSD
Whether dealing with a single-incident trauma or chronic, Complex PTSD (C-PTSD), Brainspotting allows for deep processing without the risk of re-traumatization that often accompanies verbally recounting the event.
Severe Anxiety & Panic
Panic attacks are physiological misfires. Brainspotting helps dismantle the neural feedback loops in the amygdala that trigger sudden, overwhelming terror, helping you regain autonomic regulation.
Performance & Creative Blocks
Brainspotting isn't just for trauma. It is widely used by athletes, actors, and executives to clear imposter syndrome, performance anxiety, and creative blocks, tapping into states of flow and peak performance.
Integrative Care: A Bottom-Up Approach
Healing the nervous system requires addressing both the mind and the body. We frequently integrate Brainspotting with other cutting-edge, neuroscience-based modalities:
- Somatic Experiencing (SE): We combine visual field processing with body-based tracking to help discharge "stuck" survival energy from the body.
- EMDR Therapy: While Brainspotting uses fixed eye positions, EMDR uses bilateral eye movements. Our clinicians often utilize both depending on how your specific brain processes trauma.
- Neurofeedback & QEEG: We can visually map your brainwave dysregulation and use neurofeedback to train your brain out of high-anxiety Beta states.
- Holistic Micronutrition: Trauma processing requires immense biological energy. We provide targeted nutritional interventions to ensure your brain has the micronutrients (zinc, magnesium, B-vitamins) it needs to physically rewire itself during treatment.

You Don't Have to Keep Reliving It.
If talk therapy hasn't worked for your trauma or anxiety, it's not your fault. You just need a therapy that speaks the language of your nervous system.
