Why The Past Won't Stay in the Past

You know "logically" that the traumatic event is over. You know you are safe. But your body still reacts like the danger is happening right now.

This happens because trauma can get "stuck" in the brain's information processing system. It fails to move from short-term memory (active threat) to long-term memory (history).

At Taproot Therapy Collective, we use EMDR to manually jumpstart this processing, allowing you to finally file those memories away.

How EMDR Works

Bilateral Stimulation

EMDR uses "bilateral stimulation" (moving your eyes back and forth, or using tapping) to stimulate both hemispheres of the brain. This mimics REM sleep—the natural state where your brain processes emotions.

By keeping one foot in the present (safety) and one foot in the past (memory), we can desensitize the emotional charge of the trauma.

Why We Do "Advanced" EMDR

Most clinics in Birmingham offer standard EMDR protocols. We find that for complex trauma, standard EMDR isn't always enough. That is why we integrate it with Brainspotting.

Standard EMDR Taproot's Integrative Method
Focuses on the memory narrative. Focuses on the body's reaction to the memory.
Uses general eye movements. Uses Brainspotting to find the exact eye position where trauma is stored.
Can be overwhelming for C-PTSD. Includes Somatic Resourcing to keep you safe during processing.

What Can EMDR Treat?

EMDR is evidence-based for more than just PTSD. We use it successfully for:

  • Single Event Trauma: Car accidents, assaults, or medical emergencies.
  • Performance Anxiety: Getting "stuck" in sports, music, or public speaking due to past failures.
  • Phobias: Fear of flying, heights, or driving on I-65.
  • Grief & Loss: When the pain of loss feels "frozen" and won't move.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I have to relive the trauma?
No. Unlike talk therapy, where you have to tell the story in detail, EMDR allows you to process the memory internally. You don't have to speak every detail out loud for it to work.
How fast does it work?
EMDR is often faster than traditional talk therapy. Many clients experience significant relief from single-event trauma in just 3-6 sessions, though complex trauma takes longer.
Is it hypnosis?
No. You are fully awake and in control during the entire session. It is simply a way to help your brain focus.
